With the Independence Day holiday upon us, it’s time to unwind, think about our founding fathers, and drink our weight in booze. There’s nothing wrong with a little celebration, but getting into your vehicle while drunk isn’t just illegal, it’s also incredibly dangerous and stupid. So, to help remind the inebriated to seek a designated driver when things get blurry, the state of Michigan has enlisted the help of technology. Technology and urine.

“Almost all innovation in the spirits world is coming from the craft players,” David Pickerell says. He’s not talking about ghosts; he’s talking about hard liquor. It used to be that the nouveau riche wanted to produce their own pinot noir. Nowadays they’re making their own bourbon. Since 2003 the number of licensed craft distillers has quintupled to 400, according to the American Distilling Institute. And Pickerell is eager to help upstarts—for a fee. More @ Gadget Lab.
